Day Six - Amarillo to Holbrook, AZ - June 26, 2010

We headed out of Amarillo this morning bright and early at 8:30. Just outside of town is the Cadillac Ranch where there are no cattle and it's not a Nevada brothel. What they have there are old classic Cadillacs planted nose down in the ground in an open field. The program is for the tourists to tag (write graffiti) on the cars. Being good planners, we had brought cans of spray paint all the way from Peoria just for this purpose. And guess who we ran into at the "Ranch"? None other than the young Italian couple we had met the day before in Clinton Oklahoma! The rest of the morning was pretty much a quick cruise through the lush countryside of the Texas panhandle. Those who have been there will recognize the sarcasm. We made good time to Adrian TX which is the midpoint of Route 66. Soon we after we crossed into New Mexico. We followed the Mother Road through Albuquerque, passed Grants and into Gallup NM. We looked all over for their "poll" without success.

Because we wanted to gain some additional mileage so that we'd have more time to spend at some of the interesting attractions coming up in Arizona, we decided to keep trucking down the road. This was helped somewhat by going through 3 time zones today gaining an hour each time. After we crossed into Arizona, we were on an old stretch of the highway. Zipping down this road at 60 mph we passed 2 cows in the on-coming lane and had to pass 2 horses that we trotting down our lane! We finally called it quits for the day at Holbrook, AZ after logging 530 miles for the day. The hotel manager recommended a local family-run Italian restaurant for dinner which turned out to be surprisingly good.  All-in-all, another good day on the Road.

Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, managed by the state of Texas.

Dave doing the dirty work!  I have people!!!!

Another job well done!  This could work in any town?

Adrian, TX the mid way point, 1265 miles to go.

Some parts of Route 66 are not traveled much and have vegetation growing all over.

Gallop, MN not a lot going on!

And you thought the Arch was in St. Louis, Gallop, NM.

Dave and Mike - Greg Carps pointed me to your blog. You guys look like you're having a great time. It's making me want to head back for another run on the Mother Road. My son and I did the same drive you are doing back in '08 in my 66 Corvette roadster (withOUT A/C). It was incredible but we did it in 6 days so didn't have quite as many stops as you. Enjoy the rest of your drive. Savor the run up to Oatman and the drive between Seligman and Kingsman AZ. These are two of the absolute best parts of the drive. Also, if you overnight in Flagstaff there is a good sushi restaurant right on the Route, across from the train station in downtown Flagstaff.

Cheers
